Carving photos in wood is certainly not a new idea.  Using a machine to do so is not new either.  What is new is being able to use a huge overhead gantry, three axis controlled CNC router to do so, especially when the carved detail is so fine and the price of the service is so low!

Do to recent advances in technology it is now possible to do this and many more intricate tasks using reasonably priced, durable, large format  machines and 2, 2 1/2 and 3 dimensional design and cutting programs.

In the past few years we have tried various forms of photo carving machines and software combinations.  All were either too limited, too clunky and too expensive.  Yes, there have been small laser engravers and other chisel point engravers (scrapers) which would do photos in wood, more on wood, than in wood.  Unfortunately that’s about all that they would do on very small work pieces.  These machines were exorbitantly priced, especially the laser engravers which very confusing to set up and use.

Excellent quality photographs are a must.  If the photo is limited in tonal values, then the carving will be so limited and difficult to see the details in.  This is apparent in photos that look as though they have been sprayed over with a light dusting of fine white powder or so dark and monotonous that most details are lost.  Photographs produced by professional photo studios are the best to use as they have the best tonal values.

We will be offering this carving service over the internet in the near future.  At that time we will post suggested requirements of your photos to be used.
